About Young NTUC

Young NTUC is the official youth wing of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). Launched in April 2005, Young NTUC represents working adults aged below 35 years old and currently has a membership base of more than 160,000, making it the largest youth movement in Singapore.

Outreach to members takes place on two levels; either at their workplaces or through specific interests. At the workplace, youths take on leadership and advocacy positions and help to look after the interests of their colleagues with the support of the Young NTUC national secretariat. For members who do not have unions at their workplaces, the Young NTUC secretariat helps to function as the surrogate for their activities and passions, equipping them with the necessary resources and skills to do well.

Young NTUC programmes are designed to do good by doing well and aim to achieve two objectives, engagement and visibility.

Engagement programmes are run entirely by activists. Over the years, Young NTUC activists have taken on volunteer projects with or raised funds for several eldercare and children homes as well as animal concerns agencies and environmental advocates in Singapore.

Programmes like our May Day and National Day Celebrations, Run 350 and others are organised to raise the visibility of Young NTUC. Engaging thousands, these programmes allow participants to see the strength of the labour movement up close.

In 2011, Young NTUC plans to continue contributing positively to the community and some of the programmes lined up include:

  1. Run 350 – To be held on 17th April. In support of the global 350 movement to raise awareness on the need to reduce carbon emissions, Run 350 was first held in Pulau Ubin in 2010. In order to cater to the highly enthusiastic response, Young NTUC will organise the run in the Marina Bay area so that more than 5,000 people can take part. Proceeds from the run will once again be donated to the Garden City Fund’s Plant-a-Tree programme.

  2. May Day Rally and Concert – To be held on 1st May. 2011 marks the 50th year of NTUC’s formation. As part of NTUC’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, Young NTUC will organise a concert for 8,000 members to celebrate the landmark occasion and complement the traditional May Day Rally.

  3. National Day – To be held on 9th August. For the 5th year running, Young NTUC will host the National Day celebrations at the Padang for more than 20,000 members. Organised to complement the National Day celebrations, members will be able to watch the parade live and view the spectacular fireworks in close proximity.

  4. Building Dreams – To be held in November/December. Essentially a sandcastle building event with a difference, Building Dreams aims to give members a fun platform to bond as well as spend quality time with their families. Tied to the event as well is a fundraiser where members can donate to the Thye Hua Kwan Moral Home for the Disabled.
