A Labour Of Love is Young NTUC’s first-ever musical and tells one couple’s touching love story set against the history of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). It also shows the hard work and sacrifices of the workers of yore to make Singapore what it is today.
Young NTUC took up this project to express our gratitude for our union leaders, past and present, and honour their commitment.
The lead characters, Ah Keong and Mei Ling, are played by Spencer Tan and Selly Marina, union members and amateur thespians. Beside them, the musical also features 25 aspiring and enthusiastic performers from p.L.a.Y!, Young NTUC's performance arts group. p.L.a.Y! stands for Performing with Love, by Active Youths, and constantly seeks opportunities to perform for labour movement functions. A Labour of Love sees a special appearance by former Nominated Member of Parliament Mr. Cyrille Tan, Vice-President of NTUC and General Secretary of the United Workers of Electronic and Electrical Industries (UWEEI).
The musical was specially written and directed by Jeremiah Choy (past works: Lear, The Descendents, The Descendants of the Eunuch Admiral, Spirits), composed by Babes Conde (past works: Chang & Eng and Sing To The Dawn, Official Singapore Idol Coach) and choreographed by Gani Karim(past works: Mortal Sins (1995); Broken Birds (1995) and Lear). The creative team had earlier worked together in the 1988 hit, Beauty World.
